Thursday and Friday

Friday Drew and his crew from Pennsylvania had a fun day catching sharks. We looked around for a Cobia for a while then went looking for Drum. We found them but had a hard time getting them to bite. They wanted to head in a little early but with a little more time im sure we would have gotten a few.

My good friends Marvin and Patty Mason fished thursday along with my new friend Eric. We had good shark fishing early then we trolled and looked for a cobia. En2011259620112615201126172011264220112655ded the day bottom fishing and caught lots of pigfish and a few spot and croakers. Thanks for helping me load up the bait pen guys!

John, Noah, Chris and Randy were jacked up to catch big sharks today but the northeast wind made the ocean too rough for us to safely fish out there. We fished in the sound instead and caught some flounder then went looking for Drum. We found them and had some great sightfishing! All fish were released. Thanks for making the best of the breezy conditions today guysJohn drumRandy drumnoah drum2

Cobia and Sharks

Today Matt, John, and Belinda got a workout! We caught some of the biggest Blacktip Sharks I’ve ever seen. Out of 10 Blacktips several had to be over 100 pounds. We also caught a nice Hammerhead, a couple Browns and a few Sharpnose. The kicker was a 30lb Cobia at the end of the morning trip for the grill. Thanks for a great morning guys!image8image13image2image6

Had Jake, Paul, Landon and Bret out today and it was a great one! We caught 12 big Spinner Sharks between 70 and 150 pounds with most being over 100. We also caught Blacktips, browns and some Sharpnose sharks for the grill. At one point we had 3 100lb plus spinners on at the same time. The guys did a great job fighting them and keeping them from tangling each other. The best part was catching some big Mahi Mahi on trout rods with 8lb test. Lots more pics to come.spinners and dolphin

Sharks Spanish and Dolphin

Had Jeff and his crew from Pennsylvania today and we had a great trip. We caught some nice Spanish Mackerel, a Mahi Mahi, released several Blacktips up to 50 lbs, Atlantic Sharpnose Sharks, a borderline keeper Cobia that we let go and ended the day with a Spinner Shark that was easily 200lbs. The spinner jumped about 5 foot out of the water on the hookset and we chased him for about an hour and a half before releasing him. More pics to follow.Afternoon spimmer

Michael Hughes and the boys

crooked cobiaHad Michael Hughes and the boys on Wednesday. It was a bit sporty in the morning with showers and thunderstorms so we waited it out and it turned into a beautiful day. With the overcast conditions we decided chumming was our best bet. We caught one 32″ Cobia, a Hammerhead, several Brown Sharks and a bunch of Atlantic Sharpnose Sharks. Released everything but a few Sharpnose for the grill. The boys did a great job and even jigged up a bunch of threadfin shad for bait. boys3hammer1hammer3Thanks for a fun day Guys!

Tuesday morning with Jack Fourtney

Teusdays morning trip started off with an attempt to catch Sheepshead for the first time this year. We hooked a big one on the first drop but he got away then we couldn’t hook another one after an hour of fishing. We decided to chum for sharks and hope for a Cobia. The sharks didn’t disappoint but we never got a Cobia in the slick. Thanks for a fun morning Jacksharks 2sharks 1sharks 5!

Sharks with Lee DeJean

20150602_152012_resizedsharks4Chummed for sharks and Cobia with Lee and Larry on Tuesday. We never got a Cobia in the slick but we caught some Blacktips, Browns and several White Dotter sharks. Larry had a Blacktip that was well over 60 pounds. Thanks for a fun afternoon trip Lee and Larry!

John caught this beautiful 50lb Cobia on the Sneaky today. Had one in my sights for Olivia but he went down before I could get a bait to him. Slow overall but if you only catch one its good to get a nice one! Thanks to Juri for putting the trip together.IMG_0119

Much slower fishing Saturday but we caught 5 Cobia. Most were small so we kept one nice keeper for the grill. Fish are still there just too many boats running them over. Sean Pennington caught a tiny one on his trout rod. Cute little fish!sean cobe2sean cobesean cobe3

0510151802Found some drum yesterday in the surf around Jeanette’s Pier but they were too far out to reach with a jig. Decided to run over to Whalebone Tackle and grab a few Hopkins Shortie spoons because they will cast a mile and stay down in heavy current.  Turned out to be a good move! Ended up catching 9 Drum from 27 to 32 inches on trout tackle with 8lb test.  The right gear for the right situation makes all the difference. Sound fishing for the drum is picking up too and last year when we started catching them in the surf we also started killing them in the sound around Oregon Inlet with some 50 fish plus days.

Trout and Bluefish

Plenty of nice sized Bluefish around Oregon Inlet this week. There has also been a much better showing of Speckled Trout around Manteo and the sloughs between the inlet and Nags Head.  Some of the Trout have been up to 21 inches! Got a really good report of lots of Trout just south of us that are heading this way. Stripers are starting to leave the rivers after the spawn and quite a few have been caught in our area as well. The pic is of Sean Pennington fighting a nice Bluefish at Oregon Inlet on the “Sneaky”.Sean blue
